St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Issues Statement Regarding Code Silver

October 9, 2026 (9:45 a.m.)– St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) would like to provide an update regarding the Code Silver (person with a weapon) declared on October 8, 2026.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., a threat was made toward a hospital employee. A Code Silver was declared, and the hospital was placed on active hold while the situation was assessed and addressed. St. Thomas Police Service responded immediately and worked closely with hospital leadership and security staff to ensure the safety of everyone on site.

The Code Silver was lifted at approximately 6 p.m. following confirmation that there was no ongoing threat to the hospital. The individual involved was subsequently arrested by police.

We want to reassure our community that this was not a hospital-wide attack. At all times, the safety and well-being of our patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and visitors remained our highest priority. The hospital is open, operating as normal, and remains a safe place to receive care.

We extend our sincere thanks to our staff, physicians, in-house security team, and local first responders for their expertise and swift actions. Their coordinated response helped ensure the safety of everyone within our hospital and minimized disruption to patient care.

October 8, 2026 (6:00 p.m.)– St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) declared a Code Silver (person with a weapon) at approximately 3:30 p.m.

St. Thomas Police Service was notified immediately and responded to the situation. The safety of our patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and visitors remained our highest priority throughout the incident. As a precaution, the hospital was placed on active hold and all public entrances were secured.

At approximately 6 p.m., the Code Silver was declared over. While there is no ongoing threat within the hospital, STEGH remains in a controlled access situation as an added precaution. Access to the hospital is currently limited to one designated entrance (North entrance beside the Emergency Department).

We are grateful to our staff, physicians, volunteers, and emergency response partners for their cooperation during this situation.
