St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Honours Organ and Tissue Donors with New Leaves on Tree of Life

Published On: April 13, 2026

St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is recognizing the generous gift of organ and tissue donation with the addition of 15 new leaves to its Tree of Life. The display serves as a lasting tribute to donors and their families, and the lives touched through their decision.

Unveiled during Be a Donor Month, each leaf represents a tissue donor from 2025. Together, these donors have made a meaningful difference, offering hope and healing to others.

Dr. Fahad Sheikh, Intensivist and Physician Lead for Organ and Tissue Donation at STEGH, says the Tree of Life is an important reminder of the impact of donation. “Each leaf represents a deeply personal decision made during an incredibly difficult time,” said Dr. Sheikh. “These donors and their families have given others the chance for improved health and quality of life. We are grateful for their generosity and encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about organ and tissue donation, register their decision, and share it with their loved ones.”

Located outside the Intensive Care Unit in the hospital’s Hallway of Heroes, the Tree of Life now features more than 150 handcrafted leaves. The display stands as a symbol of gratitude, remembrance, and the lasting legacy created through donation.

More than 4.7 million Ontarians – approximately 35 percent of health card holders – are registered organ and tissue donors. In St. Thomas, the registration rate is even higher at 47 percent. STEGH encourages community members to continue the conversation with family and friends about donation wishes.
