St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) proudly announces the unveiling of 28 donor leaves to its “Tree of Life,” a heartfelt tribute honouring the impact of organ and tissue donation within the STEGH community.
In recognition of Be a Donor Month, the hospital acknowledges the selfless acts of 28 tissue donors, each represented by a unique leaf on the tree. These acts of generosity took place throughout 2024.
Dr. Fahad Sheikh, Intensivist and Physician Lead for Organ and Tissue Donation at STEGH, expresses the significance of recognizing the remarkable decisions made by donors and their families during challenging times. “Their selfless choices have resulted in countless lives saved,” Dr. Sheikh remarked. “I encourage everyone to consider the gift of organ and tissue donation.”
The Tree of Life, adorned with over 150 handcrafted leaves, serves as a symbol of hope and gratitude, displayed outside the Intensive Care Unit in the Hallway of Heroes.
Over 4.7 million Ontarians (35% of health card holders) are registered donors, however in St. Thomas, the registration rate is significantly higher at 47%. With this in mind, the hospital encourages open conversations with families regarding donation decisions. For those who wish to register or gain further information, visit www.BeADonor.ca.
