STEGH’s First-Ever MRI Machine is Operational

Published On: October 1, 2024

St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) and the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation are thrilled to announce that the community’s first-ever MRI machine is operational. This state-of-the-art technology will dramatically enhance the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities for the residents of St. Thomas and Elgin County.

The highly advanced MRI machine uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce detailed 3D images of internal organs and structures, allowing STEGH’s medical team to diagnose health conditions more accurately, detect diseases earlier, and monitor treatment progress with greater precision.

“This is pivotal for our community and the future of health care in St. Thomas and Elgin County,” said Karen Davies, President & CEO of St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. “With this new MRI machine, patients no longer need to travel outside of Elgin County for an MRI. This investment in technology is a testament to our commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.”

The addition of the MRI machine will significantly reduce wait times for patients, offering local access to faster diagnostic imaging services.

This achievement was made possible through the generous support of the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation’s Transforming Tomorrow Diagnostic Imaging Campaign, which is raising the funds to enhance and expand the entire diagnostic imaging department, including the cornerstone of this campaign, the purchase and installation of our very first MRI machine.

“The incredible generosity of our community is what made this vision a reality,” shared Jeff Yurek, Chair of the Transforming Tomorrow Campaign. “The support from local residents, businesses, and organizations has been awe-inspiring, and today we are celebrating the direct impact these contributions will have on health care in St. Thomas and Elgin County.”

Mary Lou Crowley, President & CEO of the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation, shared “Our community’s passion and commitment for advancing local health care never ceases to amaze me. Every donation, large or small, has helped bring this advanced technology to STEGH, ensuring better care for our families, friends, and neighbours. Thank you. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed.”

Patients in need of an MRI scan can access this service locally, providing them with the convenience of receiving critical diagnostic imaging close to home. Referrals for MRI services must be made by a health care provider.
