November 14 is Take Our Kids to Work Day

(St. Thomas, ON) – Today, over twenty Grade 9 students will be carpooling with their parents to work and will be participating in Take Our Kids to Work Day activities at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH).

Launched in 1994, Take Our Kids to Work Day is the most recognized career education event in Canada, with an estimated 200,000 students visiting workplaces every year. The annual event involves students spending the day in the workplace of a parent, relative, or friend where they experience and learn about the world of work. Students are able to explore career options and navigate their interests in a fun and engaging way, better preparing them to make informed decisions about their future.

“The event at STEGH has grown substantially over the years,” says Lisa Minielly, Volunteer Services at STEGH. “We have developed an exciting day for the students, where they will experience a range of activities, including presentations from staff, tours of various areas within the hospital and opportunities to learn about working in the health care profession.”

According to Canadian Business, the health care sector in Canada continues to grow due to the aging population and rise of health-related technology. This growth has resulted in an increased demand for skilled health care providers. As a career choice, health care can be one of the most rewarding. Health care employees are able to nurture a desire to help others, and at the same time, earn a living.

STEGH is one of the largest employers in St. Thomas, employing over 880 staff and almost 200 physicians, dentists and midwives. In addition, STEGH has over 175 volunteers and hosts close to 130 student placements each year.
