St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is proud to announce an important enhancement to local maternity and neonatal care. Starting September 22, pregnant women in Elgin County at 32 weeks gestation or later can now deliver at STEGH, eliminating the need for many families to travel outside of the city.
Previously, expectant mothers at this stage of pregnancy had to deliver outside of St. Thomas, often placing significant stress on families who had to commute while their infants remained hospitalized. With the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) now designated as Level 2b, families can access a higher level of neonatal care right here in the community.
“This milestone reflects the dedication and expertise of our NICU team,” said Monica Olanski, Vice President Patient Services and Chief Information Officer. “Providing care closer to home not only supports mothers during delivery but also strengthens family bonds during those critical early days of an infant’s life.”
The Level 2b designation allows STEGH’s NICU to provide more advanced care for newborns who require specialized support, further advancing the hospital’s commitment to delivering exceptional care locally.
STEGH remains focused on supporting families and providing a patient-centered experience, ensuring that high-quality care is available within the community.
