National Nursing Week

Published On: May 12, 2020

This year, National Nursing Week is May 11-17. It always occurs from the Monday to the Sunday on the week of Florence Nightingale’s birthday – May 12. The week celebrates the legacy of Florence Nightingale, a nurse who became famous for treating wounded soldiers during the Crimean war, and for her work in establishing nursing as a profession.

The World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed 2020 the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. At the time of this declaration the WHO could not have predicted that nurses across the globe would be involved in a pandemic. Saving lives, providing care and keeping communities calm and safe. This really is the year of the Nurse.

At St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, we created the theme: Nurse by Choice. This video highlights some of the reasons our nurses chose the nursing profession:

Armed with courage, knowledge and compassion, our nurses work tirelessly to care for our patients and the community.  We thank them for their service.
