Women & Children's Department Tour

Welcome to the Women & Children's Department at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital.
Welcome to our virtual photo tour of the Women and Children’s Department at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. Here, you’ll get a closer look at the spaces and services designed to support both mothers and babies. From our Labour and Delivery Rooms to the NICU, each photo offers a glimpse into the care and comfort we provide. Explore the unit through the images below to see where compassionate care meets a warm, welcoming environment.

When you arrive on the third floor, stepping off the elevator, you'll be welcomed by a vibrant mural. Our "Born at STEGH" wall is a heartwarming tribute to all the babies born here, where parents and loved ones can purchase a bubble featuring their baby's name. Managed by the STEGH Foundation, this initiative supports fundraising efforts for our Women & Children's Unit.

The Nursing Station is your first point of contact upon arrival. Whether you're here for an outpatient appointment or in active labour, the unit clerk or nurse at the Nursing Station will greet you and gather information about your visit. This includes confirming your identification, reviewing your health card details, and ensuring everything is in order for your care.

Depending on the reason for your visit, you may be directed to the Triage room. Here, a nurse will assess your condition and determine the next steps. Common reasons for visiting Triage include blood pressure checks, injections, or active labour. After a thorough assessment, the nurse will decide whether you can return home or if you need to be admitted for further care. Last year, we had 2,220 obstetrical visits!

The Nursing Station is the “hub” of the unit, where the unit clerk and nurses manage essential tasks such as charting, reviewing results, answering phone calls, and handling patient admissions and discharges.

This is a Pediatric Procedure Room, where various procedures, including tongue ties and circumcisions, are performed.

Our unit features a Pediatric Outpatient Clinic for follow-up appointments related to investigations or referrals with our pediatrician. These scheduled visits include monitoring a baby’s weight after discharge or conducting repeat lab tests. In 2024/25, we had 783 pediatric visits.

Additionally, two of our six Pediatric Rooms are equipped with negative pressure capabilities (not pictured), allowing them to be used for patients with airborne illnesses, such as measles.

We have six Post-Natal Rooms designed for patients who have had a caesarean section (C-section) or those who require a longer stay. All of the rooms in the unit are private rooms, offering enhanced comfort and privacy for our patients. Each room is equipped with a cot for a partner or support person to stay comfortably.

Each patient room is equipped with a communication board on the wall, which serves as a tool for the care team. It displays important details such as the baby’s name and feeding plan, introduces the care team members, and includes a space for patients and support persons to write any questions they have for the team.

The waiting room offers a quiet space for partners and support people to wait, if needed. It features a television, but you're welcome to bring your own device, such as an iPad or mobile phone, for entertainment.

For the safety of our tiniest patients, the entire Women & Children’s Unit has controlled entry and exit. All babies born at STEGH are fitted with electronic ankle bracelets as part of an infant protection system to ensure security. If a baby is moved outside a designated area, the bracelet will trigger an alarm. These bracelets are designed to be safe, comfortable, and reliable.

We have six Labour and Delivery Rooms, each equipped with items to support women during childbirth, such as a birthing ball for sitting, rocking, during labour. After birth, both mom and baby remain in the same room until discharge.

Each Labour and Delivery Room is equipped with a couch that can be transformed into a bed, providing a comfortable place for a partner or support person to rest during their stay.

A lounge area is available, offering coffee, tea, ice water, and a microwave for patients and their partners or support persons to use during their stay.

The unit features a hydrotherapy tub for women in labour. Many find the soothing effects of the tub help manage contraction pain and promote relaxation.

The newly updated shower room offers women a space to freshen up and relax during their stay. Towels are provided for added convenience.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides care for babies born at or after 34 weeks gestation who require moderate medical support. While our NICU is funded for four infants, we can accommodate up to five at a time, supported by a specialized team of nurses trained to deliver expert care.

The lounge provides a quiet space for families to relax and spend time together while their baby is in the NICU. It is equipped with coffee, tea, and a television for added comfort.

The Care by Parent Suite, located on the Labour and Delivery Unit, offers parents the opportunity to stay overnight with their baby once they are strong enough to leave the NICU. This time helps ease the transition home. Nursing support is available throughout the night to assist mom and ensure she feels confident and comfortable caring for her baby before discharge.
