Redefining Our Future

We are redefining our future first by transforming care and then building new facilities to match. This work will help us achieve our vision of delivering an excellent patient care experience.

Transforming Care

Transforming Care means first, understanding our care pathways and processes through our patients' eyes and then, making improvements that will result in an excellent patient care experience, every time. Much of the work we will do to transform care will also guide the design features for our new build that both reflect and enhance our care delivery and support.

Our approach to transforming care is based on the proven method of applying the Lean management philosophy and techniques in healthcare. Examples of key areas of focus include:

  • Improving the patient experience through patient care pathways that connect the patient’s hospital journey from beginning to end,
  • Improving decision-making processes and direct support to the patient journey that reduces waiting times and length of hospital stay,
  • Refocusing nursing care to target a return of 80% of nursing time to direct patient care.

We have embarked on a three year journey to transform care at STEGH and to create the capability to sustain and continue to improve care thereafter. This effort will prepare our hospital to be best in class as we move into our new facilities in 2017.

Redevelopment Project

Through our redevelopment project, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is transforming its facilities. On August 24, 2011, The Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long Term Care visited STEGH to approve our $100 million redevelopment project.

The project includes construction of new Emergency, Surgical and Mental Health facilities.
