New Mammography Suite Opens at STEGH

Mammography exams can be perceived as uncomfortable, unnerving and intimidating by some women.  St. Thomas Elgin General’s newly opened Mammography Suite, has been designed to help alleviate some of these fears.  Equipped with a new, state-of-the-art Digital Mammography system, the space opened earlier this month and features the Sensory Suite concept, which is designed to stimulate a woman’s senses using seaside, garden and waterfall images and sounds to distract her from the perceived discomfort, pain, and anxiety of a mammogram.  With the new equipment, the GE Senographe, we are also able to provide low-dose, high quality images with a more efficient platform for our technologists and a more ergonomic design that provides a more comfortable exam for our patients.  Funding for this new machine was provided by the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation.

Susan McIntryre, through the Ontario Breast Screening Program, was the first patient to have a Breast Imaging study in the new suite..

“It’s exciting to be the first patient to use this technology and it’s great for our hospital and community to have it here,” says Susan, who has been coming for annual breast health checkups for many years.

“It’s always been a positive experience. The staff are awesome and always explain everything fully to me. I will say, the new machine is much more comfortable and it took less time than in the past.”

Jodi Edwards, Interim Manager of Diagnostic Imaging at STEGH, is thrilled to be able to offer this service to the women of St. Thomas and Elgin County.

“We are now able to provide a more pleasant experience in a less clinical setting for our patients. To have the ability to alleviate the stress and anxiety that is felt by many of our patients while at the same time delivering an optimal exam with superior quality pleases the entire department.” adds Jodi.
