 Our Hospital

The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is a progressive, fully accredited community hospital providing comprehensive 24 hour coverage in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Emergency and Family Medicine. STEGH employs over 800 staff and benefits from the generous contribution of more than 250 Auxiliary members and volunteers. We are a community hospital training centre of the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College providing clinical experience for physicians and nurses.

Our 166 bed facility consists of  Acute, Continuing Care, and Rehabilitation beds.  As the only full-service hospital in Elgin County, all except tertiary services are provided here. We are committed to excellence and our core values of compassion, accountability, respect and simplicity define the approach taken to patient focused care. The organizational structure promotes decision making by those closest to the issue. Our vision is to deliver an excellent patient care experience.

The surgical program at STEGH includes Orthopaedic, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Maxillofacial and General Surgery and is supported by a Coronary and Intensive Care Unit. Modalities of medical imaging include Spiral CT Suite, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, Bone Densitometry and Ultra Sound. Cardio-pulmonary diagnostic testing includes Electrocardiograms, Stress Testing, Pulmonary Function Testing, Holter Monitors and Echocardiography. STEGH also provides 24-hour inpatient Respiratory Therapy Services and a Sleep Disorder Clinic. Salaried Clinical Associates (Hospitalists) provide in-hospital care for patients who do not have a family doctor or patients with a doctor who chooses not to have hospital privileges.

STEGH provides palliative care, pastoral care and specially trained volunteers to assist with ER staff during crises. A chemotherapy clinic operates as a satellite clinic of the London Regional Cancer Centre with outpatient services Monday to Friday. Plans for the future include an approved building renewal project to expand the Operating Room Suite, and the Emergency and Ambulatory Care departments to accommodate new technology and enhance patient care. The plan also includes the addition of a Schedule 1 Mental Health program.
