The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) and the St. Thomas Elgin Health Recruitment Partnership are pleased to host eight first-year undergraduate medical students from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry from May 31-June 3, 2010.
National Nurses Week takes place this week, honouring the effort and dedication of nurses to the ever evolving health-care system. National Nurses Week, chosen around Florence Nightingale's May 12th birthday, was especially notable in 2010 for it marked the 100th anniversary of this nursing pioneer's death. Today, nurses around the globe carry forward her pledge to professional nursing excellence.
Outpatients at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) will soon be guided to the new Client Services area on the first floor to register for their appointments and tests. Improving the patient registration process, which includes opening the centrally located Client Services area, is part of STEGH’s vision to provide an excellent patient care experience. Patients will notice new signs guiding them to the Client Services area, and a new volunteer information desk will also be located on the first floor to assist patients and visitors.
The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) will join many other healthcare facilities across Ontario and become smoke free. The implementation date will be May 31, 2010, aligning with the World Health Organization’s “World No Tobacco Day”. Smoking will not be permitted anywhere on hospital property including parking lots and formerly designated smoking areas.

St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is proud to announce it has received Full Accreditation from Accreditation Canada following its on-site survey in June 2009. Full Accreditation status is the highest level achievable. The survey format, new this year, focuses heavily on patient safety.
A tractor is now sitting inside the Atrium at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH). However, it was no accident! It is there to raise money for the STEGH Foundation. As part of the 2010 International Plowing Match - - a 50-year old beautifully refurbished John Deere 3010 tractor will be won by a lucky individual. Valued at over $25,000, it was completely restored by Mike Bloetjes of Huron Tractor in St. Thomas.
The number of Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patients at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) has steadily declined over the past year. Improved community placement of ALC patients will allow STEGH to remove twenty Transitional Care beds from service. These beds were allocated in 2004 as a temporary way to address the ALC issue. In fact since June of this year, 17 STEGH beds have been closed as part of the annual summer beds closure and with the continued decline in ALC occupancy they have remained out of service. These 17 temporarily closed beds (on CCC-C and on 4th and 5th floors) will reopen at the same time the 20 Transitional Care beds (CCC –B wing) are closed, to maintain the current overall beds in service at 146.
In response to the increasing number of people in the community with influenza-like illness, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) will be establishing an Alternate Site Flu Assessment Clinic in A-Wing of the Complex Continuing Care Centre (CCC.) The clinic will open Thursday November 5th at 2:00p.m.
The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is seeing an increase in Emergency Department (ED) visits – in particular, an increase in patients coming to ED with influenza-like illness. In the past few days, 20-30% of the visits in ED were patients with flu- like symptoms. This is the first surge STEGH has seen.

St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is teaming up with Elgin St Thomas Public Health to help share a safety message, to ensure that Elgin County residents do all they can to ‘Be Safe and Be Seen’. STEGH staff in the Emergency Department (ED) will be wearing reflective arm bands during their shifts the week of May 25th to remind the community to be sure they can be seen by drivers when they are out walking or cycling, or engaged in other activities.
St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) recognizes the everyday commitment, and caring of their Nurses as they celebrate National Nursing Week May 11th to May 15th. The theme this year is „Nursing – You Can‟t Live Without It.‟ “The week is filled with different learning opportunities, free massages from Talbot Trail Physiotherapy, a Wii Golf Tournament, a cooking demonstration by Chef Tracy Jones and other special events for our Nurses,” explains Terri Benwell, Nursing Professional Practice Leader at STEGH.
