The outbreak of Gastrointestinal illness in the Continuing Care Centre at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) has been declared over by Elgin St Thomas Public Health. All temporary visitor precautions have been lifted and normal visitor guidelines are back in place effective Monday January 23rd.

As Ontario’s health system continues to wrestle with a challenging economy, a growing and aging population, and increasingly complex patient needs, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) continues to enhance its efforts in quality, accountability and transparency.
An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness (symptoms include vomiting, nausea and diarrhea) has been confirmed on 4th Floor, North Wing, of the Acute Medical Unit at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH). The Hospital has been working closely with Elgin St. Thomas Public Health to manage the situation and precautions are in place on this floor, to minimize the spread of illness. Currently, six patients and one staff member have gastrointestinal symptoms related to this outbreak.
St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) has received a Platinum Level Quality Healthcare Workplace Award from the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and Ministry of Health and Long Term Care-Workforce Ontario. STEGH was one of only four Ontario hospitals to receive this distinction.
Twenty two grade nine students from across Elgin County will spend a day at work at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) on “Take Our Kids to Work Day” November 3, 2010. The provincial program is designed to offer grade nine students the opportunity to job shadow for a day, gaining a better understanding of a work environment. Students will be working in a variety of areas throughout STEGH including the Laboratory, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Housekeeping, Dietary, Finance, Diagnostic Imaging, Acute Medical Unit, Engineering, Surgical Unit, Pharmacy, Security, Central Supply, Cardio Respiratory, and Complex Continuing Care.
In the past 20 years, the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) has provided more than 3.6 million screens to more than 1.1 million Ontario women aged 50-69 and detected more than 19,000 cancers – the majority in the early stages. In St. Thomas, the OBSP site opened at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) on April 29, 1999. Since 1999 they have screened more than 18,000 women living in Elgin County and detected 74 breast cancers. In 2010/2011 they expect to screen more than 2,700 Elgin women. A team including Mammography Technologists, Radiologists, OBSP nurse, Clerical Staff and Volunteers contribute to the success of the breast screening program at STEGH.
Renovations are underway to improve the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital’s (STEGH) Emergency Department waiting, reception and triage areas. The 12-week project will be a win-win for both patients and staff. Newly installed sliding doors will separate the new triage area and main waiting room, providing patients and staff with increased privacy, security and infection control – all vital improvements. Construction began July 5th and the project will be complete mid October.
The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) and the St. Thomas Elgin Health Recruitment Partnership are pleased to host eight first-year undergraduate medical students from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry from May 31-June 3, 2010.
National Nurses Week takes place this week, honouring the effort and dedication of nurses to the ever evolving health-care system. National Nurses Week, chosen around Florence Nightingale's May 12th birthday, was especially notable in 2010 for it marked the 100th anniversary of this nursing pioneer's death. Today, nurses around the globe carry forward her pledge to professional nursing excellence.
Outpatients at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) will soon be guided to the new Client Services area on the first floor to register for their appointments and tests. Improving the patient registration process, which includes opening the centrally located Client Services area, is part of STEGH’s vision to provide an excellent patient care experience. Patients will notice new signs guiding them to the Client Services area, and a new volunteer information desk will also be located on the first floor to assist patients and visitors.
