 Diagnostic Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a high frequency sound wave used to make images of the organs, structure and blood flow inside the body. This study is performed by a Registered Sonographer and read by a Radiologist. A report of the study is then forwarded to the ordering physician(s).

The Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound is responsible for the following services:

  • Abdominal
  • Pelvic/Endovaginal
  • Thoracic
  • Carotid Doppler
  • Venous Doppler
  • Testicular
  • Thyroid
  • Breast
  • Transrectal Prostate and biopsy
  • Musculoskeletal (shoulder, hand, wrist, elbow, ankle, foot, knee)
  • Pediatric (abdomen, pelvic, pyloric stenosis, intussusception, intracranial, hip)
  • General interventional procedures (biopsies and fine needle aspiration)

Department Hours:  
Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

There is a technologist in occasionally on the weekends for booked appointments only.

Location

Ground floor, west wing adjacent to Emergency department and Medical Imaging department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there preparation for exams?
A: Yes, some procedures require prep. The instructions are on the reverse side of our requisition. If you have concerns or do not understand the instructions, please call our department directly and we will be glad to explain prep to you.
   
Q: How long will my test take?
A: Most exams require 1/2 hour to 1 hour to complete.
   
Q: How quickly will I know the results?
A: Your doctor usually has results of your test in 1 to 2 working days. We do not explain the results directly to the patient.
