The Stuart and Irene Lunn Palliative Care Unit
Palliative care is a philosophy of patient care for indiviuals who have a progressive life threatening illness. The Stuart and Irene Lunn Palliative Care Unit will provide a home-like environment with a garden theme where patients will receive pain and symptom management and psycho/social and spiritual support according to best practice. This eight bed unit has five private and two semi-private rooms as well as several family rooms.
Stuart and Irene Lunn
Irene Kirk was born in
Melville,
Saskatchewan. She married Stuart Lunn in 1948 and settled into farming life in Stuart’s beloved
Southwold
Township. Family and neighbors recall Stuart and Irene as “living modestly with a no nonsense work ethic.” That work ethic followed Irene from the office at a local car dealership to the many responsibilities and duties of a Court Support Officer at the Elgin County Courthouse. Stuart was a respected foreman with HIRA Construction and was known for his “easy smile and loving nature especially when it came to children.”
Stuart died in 2000 and Irene passed away in 2003, survived by many wonderful relatives who reside within
Elgin
County.
Throughout their lives, the Lunn’s financially supported organizations that benefited their community. Before Stuart’s passing, Stuart and Irene planned a legacy gift that would support the care and treatment of cancer patients at STEGH, a lasting tribute from a ‘humble couple’ to their beloved
Elgin
County.

The Michael and Irma Koleada Transitional Care Unit
The Michael and Irma Koleada Transitional Care Unit will provide a home-like environment for patients who do not require acute care. Dining room meals and activation programs such as wheelchair exercise class will help patients to maintain their optimum functioning. A patients' library is located across from the elevators.
Michael and Irma Koleada
Michael was born in Purdue, Saskatchewan. He trained with the Royal Canadian Air Force south of St. Thomas before being sent overseas. His military background showed as Michael was always "prim and proper". Upon returning from Europe, he settled in Aylmer performing a variety of jobs from gas station owner to salesman. Through the years, he remained active in the Aylmer Legion. Irma was a respected teacher who shared her love of books and learning with her students.
Stories abound their kindness; one in particular, in helping the Jung family settle into Aylmer. Irma patiently taught English to John and his wife, while Mike could be seen walking their little girl along Talbot Street to minimize the distraction. They became close friends and mentors to the Jung family who will always treasure fond memories.
Irma passed away tragically in an accident in 1991. Michael died in 2003.
Today the Koleada's legacy supports many community organizations including the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital.
