In general many of today’s health care decisions are very complex. They deal
with questions of life, death and the quality of life. An ethical problem may
exist when the choices are not clear or when people disagree about what is best
for the patient

Goals
Education Goals
to raise awareness of the Ethics Resources among all
hospital employees and physicians
to enhance sensitivity of employees to ethical issues

to assist caregivers to better understand the legal, ethical
and moral dimensions of their decisions
Policy Review Goals
- to review any hospital polices involving an ethical
component

to provide feedback, and recommendations to appropriate
individuals
Ethics Resources
Some examples of policies with ethical components
include:
- Consent
- Do Not Resuscitate
- Least Restraint
- Research
- Code of Conduct
Consultation
Anyone directly involved with a patient can seek a consultation on the
patient’s behalf. This includes: the patient, family members, physicians, nurses other members
of the patient’s health care team. STEGH contracts Dr. Rob Butcher as our ethicist who may be involved in any
case consultation.
To help us meet our goals both the Professional Practice Council and Patient
Safety/Risk Council have a part in the ethics process at STEGH.
