The Surgical Program provides perioperative care to patients of all ages requiring surgery, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The surgical services include dental, ear/nose/throat, general, gynaecology, maxillo-facial, ophthalmology, orthopedic, thoracic, urology and vascular surgery. In addition, caesarean sections and endoscopic procedures are performed in the Surgical Suite. The units providing the perioperative care include the Surgical Suite, the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit, the Outpatient Surgical Department, the Second North Surgery Inpatient Unit and the Family Centred Maternal Child Care Unit. In addition to the continuum of care provided to surgical patients, the Surgical Program provides coronary or intensive care to patients in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and obstetrical, pediatric or neonatal intensive care to patients in the Family Centred Maternal Child Care Unit.
24/7 on call coverage is provided for the program by OR nursing staff, a surgeon, an anaesthetist, an obstetrician, a pediatrician and an internal medicine physician.
The Units, Departments and Services within the Surgical Program all contribute to providing high quality patient care ensuring that the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital becomes the “Best Community Hospital in Ontario.”
The Surgical Program is responsible for the coordination of the following within the Health Centre:
- Surgical Suite including Operating
Room (OR) and Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU)
- Outpatient
Surgury Department
- Inpatient Surgery Unit including a Constant Observation Unit (COU)
and a Pre-Op Holding Unit
- Family Centred Maternal Child
Care Unit (FCMCCU)
- Cardiac Intensive
Care Unit (CICU)

- Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
